Vergina and Pella - A Journey Through the History and Culture of Ancient Macedonia

Pella At the end of the 5th century B.C., the King of Macedon Archelaus transferred there the seat of his kingdom from the current Vergina to Pella, which remained capital of Macedon until their submission to Romans in 168 B.C. Pella was at peak during the years of King Philip II (360-336 B.C.) and Alexander the Great (336-323 B.C.). Pella’s archaeological site covers an extent of 1.000 acres. The most important finds of the excavations were the houses with the mosaic pavements, the palace on the northern hill, the agora in the city center and three sanctuaries: Thesmoforion, Venus’s sanctuary and Darrhon’s sanctuary. Pella’s museum is located on the north-east side of the archaeological site. This is where visitors end up after the sightseeing of the locality and where they can admire many of the archaeological findings and connect them to the areas’ monuments, so as to understand many facets of everyday life in the Macedonian capital.

Vergina In the ancient times, the name of Vergina was Aigai and it was the first capital of the Kingdom of Macedon. In 1977, the archaeologist Manolis Andronikos led excavations in Vergina and unearthed four burial sites, three of which belong, according to the majority opinion of experts, to Philip II, father of Alexander the Great, to one of his wives and to the son of Alexander the Great Alexander IV of Macedon. The wider archaeological site of Vergina comprises the Museum, the Palace, the city (ancient Greek term: «άστυ»), the acropolis and the surrounding area. The most important sight is the Royal Tombs in the ancient necropolis of Aigai. The district also houses the museum with the findings, covered with mud, as the tombs have been for so many years. The most important exhibit of the museum is the gold larnaca (funerary casket) adorned with the star of the Macedonian Dynasty which contained the bones of King Philip II and remnants of his golden wreath.
